How to adjust the chain on Kawasaki Z900
How to measure chain slack on the Z900:
- Put the gearbox in neutral.
- Place the Kawasaki Z900 on its side stand on a flat surface.
- Push the lower part of the chain down and check the clearance between the chain and the swingarm at the right end of the chain guide located under the Kawasaki Z900 swingarm. The correct distance between the swingarm and the center of the chain should be between 25 and 35mm.
How to adjust chain slack on Kawasaki Z900:
- Remove the protective cap from the wheel axle nut of the Kawasaki Z900.
- Loosen the left and right chain adjustment locknuts with a 12mm wrench.
- Remove the safety pin with flat pliers and loosen the axle nut using a 27mm socket. Do not remove the axle nut completely.
- To tighten the Kawasaki Z900 chain, turn the 12mm adjuster nut clockwise. To loosen the chain, turn the adjuster nut counterclockwise, then push the rear wheel forward.
- Check the chain slack after every quarter turn of the tension nut.
- Adjust the chain slack evenly on both sides of the swingarm, using the alignment gauges located on each side of the Kawasaki Z900 swingarm.
- Tighten the 12mm locknuts.
- Tighten the 27mm axle nut to 100Nm.
- Check the chain tension again.
- Place the safety pin and the protective cap on the axle nut.
